Rewards From Him

Psalm 127: 3
Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him.

Psalms 139: 13-16
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

Getting Comfortable, Getting Mad

Update

Our weight check with the doctor went okay on Monday. Jack had good gains of about 3 ounces. Sophie's weight was up just barely. We have started supplementing her eating with a bottle every now and then. Eating just tires her out, hopefully the ease of a bottle will help. We go back in for another weight check for Sophie in a few days.

Things are starting to seem "normal" around the house. We are getting anywhere from 1 and 1/2 to 3 hours of sleep at a time.

Night One and Night Two

Our first night home from the hospital (Wednesday, October 11th) was rough. We were up every half hour to forty five minutes feeding, calming and worrying.
Our second night (last night, October 12th) was much smoother. Jack and Sophie breastfed together without any supplements at around 9:00, 12:00, 3:00 and 5:00 AM. The feedings were pretty easy, without too much coaxing. They slept in between the feedings, allowing us to have some sleeping periods greater than forty five minutes.
Sophie is picking up her eating and Jack is doing very well. We have an appointment with the pediatrician today for a check up and to be weighed. We hope to see some gains in weight.

Jack Hanging Out

Our Nursery

For anyone who was curious what the nursery looked like.

Home Sweet Home

After a full week in the hospital, Sophie was discharged today. We arrived home for the first time at about 1:00 PM.

Update

We are winding down a pretty good day with Jack and Sophie.

We were able to feed at regular two and a half hour increments with Jack and Sophie feeding at the same time throughout the day. Also, we did not need any supplemental bottles after they were done breastfeeding.

We also gave Jack his first bath. And he did not seem to mind it too much.

Their weights have pretty much stabalized and the hope is that they start to rise.

Tomorrow we will most likely be heading home and we hope that Sophie can come with us. We don't know when we will get the final approval.

Jack did get to watch a bit of the Republican Debate tonight.

Sophie Passes Car Seat Test

"I have to take a test?"

Sophie sat in her car seat for an hour and a half and breathed regularly to pass the test.

Update

Jack, Sophie, Matt and Amy are doing well.

The night the babies were born, Sophie's breathing slowed dramatically or stopped and this caused her heart rate to slow for a few seconds (this is called apnea). The doctors decided to keep her in the intensive care unit to constantly monitor her breathing and her heart rate. If their are no other incidents like this, they will discharge her after seven days. The seven days ends tomorrow, Wednesday, October 10th and we hope to be heading home then.

Jack has been in our room since the night he was born.

We have been staying in the hospital since they were born. The hospital has given us a courtesy room so that we do not have to leave without Sophie.

Their weights dropped from their birth weights (which is common), but are now plateauing or on the upswing. This is the biggest issue we are praying for (continued increase in weights).

Breastfeeding is also at the top of this list of prayer requests. We are running back and forth between our room and the intensive care unit to feed. They are on the same floor, but we have to go through several check points and walk several hundred yards to get to Sophie. This doesn't seem like very far, but when the babies are ready to eat it seems like quite a trip. They are both doing pretty well and are feeding on 100% breast milk. Sometimes we have to give the breast milk to them through a bottle, but we are working on getting them 100% from momma. Mom has had the opportunity to have them both breastfeeding at the same time and that has been quite a challenge.

We are getting used to the night shift.

They are more adorable then we could have imagined and we are overwhelmingly blessed to have Jack and Sophie. Just as the verse at the top of the page proclaims, they are truly rewards from Him.
